LIC gets its first woman MD

 Corporation of India () on Friday got its first female managing director (MD) and another new MD. The government has appointed Usha Sangwan, executive director (corporate communication) at LIC and V K Sharma, MD and chief executive officer of , as the two new MDs. With these two appointments, LIC is set to function at its full strength of four MDs after almost two years. These would be S B Mainak, Sushobhan Sarkar, Sangwan and Sharma. According to finance ministry sources, the two new MDs have been appointed till they retire from the corporation. According to the norms, LIC can have four MDs, and a chairman, as part of its top management.
After former managing director T S Vijayan retired in November 2012, there were only two MDs — Sarkar and Thomas Mathew T. When former chairman D K Mehrotra retired in May, Mathew took over as in-charge chairman, before retiring at the end of June. Later, following Mathew’s retirement, Roy, who was elevated as an MD in May, was appointed chairman. Then, Sarkar was left as the only MD. To fill this void, in July, Mainak (executive director-investments) was appointed MD.

First Indian-origin woman crowned Miss America

The Miss America pageant has crowned its first winner of Indian heritage. Moments after winning the 2014 crown, 24 year-old Nina Davuluri described how delighted she is that the nearly century-old pageant sees beauty and talent of all kinds. “I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity,” she said in her first press conference after winning the crown in Atlantic City, New Jersey’s Boardwalk Hall. “I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”
The 24 year-old Miss New York’s talent routine was a Bollywood fusion dance. The native of Syracuse, New York wants to be a doctor, and is applying to medical school, with the help of a $50,000 (38,000) scholarship she won as part of the pageant title. She is the second consecutive Miss New York to win the Miss America crown, succeeding Mallory Hagan, who was selected in January when the pageant was still held in Las Vegas. The Miss America Organization will compensate Hagan for her shortened reign.

SBI gets first woman Managing Director Ms.Arundhati Battacharya :

The Centre has appointed Arundhati Bhattacharya as a Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest commercial bank. She is the first woman Managing Director of SBI and is also tipped to be the Chairperson of the bank when incumbent Chairman, Pratip Chaudhuri, retires in end-September. 
Prior to this appointment, Bhattacharya was Managing Director and Chief Executive of SBI Capital Markets, the merchant banking arm of SBI. Currently, SBI has four Managing Directors. Bhattacharya has replaced Diwakar Gupta, who was Chief Financial Officer and Managing Director of the bank and retired in end-July.

Indian-American Nisha Desai Biswal nominated for key post in Obama Administration

US President Barack Obama has nominated an accomplished Indian-American woman administrator as America's new point person for South Asiato succeed Robert Blake.  Subject to confirmation by the SenateNisha Desai Biswal, who is currently the Assistant Administrator for Asia at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), will replace incumbent Blake to head the South Asia bureau in the US State Department. 

Desai is expected to become the first person of Indian-origin to head the bureau, which oversees US foreign policy and relations with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan.

AIBEA hails Laxmi Srinivas appointment as employee director on SBH board

The All India Bank Employees’ Association has hailed the appointment of Laxmi Srinivas as Workman Employee Director on the board of State Bank of Hyderabad.
The appointment of Srinivas has assumed significance because she is, according to the AIBEA General Secretary C.H. Venkatachalam, the first woman employee to be appointed as Employee Director in a bank. Ever since the banks were nationalised in 1969, the AIBEA has been fighting for workman representation on the boards of the banks.


N. Laxmi Srinivas, working in the head office of the State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH) here was nominated as Workmen Employee Director on the bank’s Board by Government of India for a period of three years. Currently, she is treasurer in the SBH Staff Association, a press release said. Ms. Laxmi Srinivas graduated from Osmania University, joined the bank as a clerk in 1978 and was re-designated as special assistant in 2008.

Dipika Pallikal, also known as Dipika Rebecca Pallikal was born on 21 September 1991 to Syrian Christian parents from Kerala in Chennai, India. She played her first international tournament in London when she was in her sixth grade, and till date, Dipika has won the German Open, Dutch Open, French Open, Australian Open, Scottish Open on the European Junior Squash Circuit.
Dipika Pallikal is an Indian squash player. She is the first Indian woman to break into the top 10 in the WSA rankings. She won 3 WISPA tour titles in 2011 that saw her attain a career best ranking of 13. Later, she bettered that with a top 10 ranking in December 2012.[1] She was runner up in theTournament of Champions 2012 and reached the semifinals of Australian Open 2012.She won her sixth WSA title by winning the Meadowood Pharmacy Open on February 2013.

Indian sisters first twins to climb Mount Everest
Two 21-year-old Indian sisters have scripted history by becoming the first twins ever to conquer the summit of Mount Everest together

Tashi and Nancy Malik from Dehra Dun achieved this feat by successfully reaching the world's highest mountain peak at 8,848 meters, an official at Nepal's Ministry of Tourism and Culture said.

The duo were among other record-makers including the first women from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan who climbed the Everest yesterday.

During a so-called "fair weather" window yesterday, 146 people reached the summit of the world's highest peak with 94 more completing the journey today.gether.

Mumbai Girl tops GRE with full marks:

20-year-old Ashwini Nene from Mumbai has topped the Graduate Record Examination by scoring 340 out of 340 marks.

A Mumbai girl at 20 has topped the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) - a pre-requisite for admissions to most US graduate schools and for some other countries - by scoring full marks, 340/340, an official said today.


The topper is 20-year-old Ashwini Nene a student of Sardar Patel Institute of Technology, Andheri.The GRE results were announced by Educational Testing Services, a US-based organisation that conducts the examinations worldwide.
Nene is one of the few students globally to have scored full marks in a revised and tougher GRE format this year. GRE is a pre-requisite for admissions to most US graduate schools and for some other countries.
