Public sector banks likely to cut base rate

Public sector banks are likely to cut the base rate in the coming days in keeping with the Finance Minister’s suggestion to bring down the lending rates.

Although most of the bankers, who attended today’s meeting with Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, did not see this as an instruction, they were inclined to implement it in true spirit.

Base rate is the rate below which banks cannot lend.
