Finance minister Palaniappan Chidambaram says some among the 26public sector banks would be better off merging. True, Indian banks simply do not have large enough balance sheets to meet the needs of rapidly globalising large companies.
Banks could reap economies of scale by merging. And that was the reason why Chidambaram had mooted the idea back in 2005, but there was resistance from managements.
